Measuring Sound: How Decibels Work

Why is 100 dB so much louder than 50 dB? Understanding logarithmic scales.

The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit. This means that a small increase in numbers represents a huge increase in actual power.

The Rule of 10

Every increase of 10 dB represents a ten-fold increase in sound intensity. So, 20 dB is 10 times more intense than 10 dB, and 30 dB is 100 times more intense. A rock concert (110 dB) is billions of times more intense than a whisper (20 dB).
